Some Music Wise Words I'd like to share with you......

Before resound you have no power. You go in the mountain, you say one word, that echo will go thousands times more, thousands of miles. That is the power of the resounding sound or anahad. Unlimited sound vibrates and creates light and creates life. Yogi Bhajan

In our bodies also, there are infinite sound vibrations on the different layers of consciousness, the permutations and combinations of which go to form this body. The yogis say that in the beginning there was only one sound, and that sound was the sacred OM, and that later on, through its sound vibrations, the universe came into being. Swami Satyananda Saraswati

All life is vibration. Each sense responds to distinct vibratory energies around the physical body. The eye is receptive to specific frequency ranges, the ear to others. Responses to different frequencies are directed through the skin, bones, eyes and ears to the brain. The receptive abilities of your eyes, ears and nose allow the outer world to enter your inner cosmos. Touch and taste are far more immediate and physical. They respond to the closer, more intimate vibrations around us. Don Campbell

Physical sound can lead you to the inner vibrations of prana. Prana is the cause of all sound, and sound is the expression of prana. Swami Satchidananda

Musical sound acts directly on the soul and finds an echo there, since music is innate in humans. Wassily Kandinsky

Everything owes its existence solely and completely to sound. Sound is the factor which holds it together, sound is the basis of form and shape. Peter Guy Manners

Work with sound until you are absolutely amazed that you can produce such a sound and it seems to you that you are just the instrument through which the divine pied piper blows the whisper of the incantations of his magic spell....Become yourself a pure vibration beyond space. If the sound generated by the vocal chords into the vibratory network of the universe has the faculty of tuning one, it is because it links one with the cosmic symphony. The repetition of a physical sound sets off a sound current, a vibrational tidal wave in the ether, by building up energy....You must become pure vibration and pass on through to the other side. Vilayat Inayat Khan

All that is visible, clings to the invisible, the audible to the inaudible, the tangible to the intangible: perhaps the thinkable to the unthinkable. Novalis

The clearer a musical expression is, the more powerfully does it act in scanning our whole being and experience for its likeness. Manfred Clynes

Every atom constantly sings a song, and it is this tone which creates finer or denser forms of greater or smaller density. Lama Govinda

Atoms are called vibrations in occultism. HP Blavatsky

At the root of all power and motion, there is music and rhythm, the play of patterned frequencies against the matrix of time. Before we make music, music makes us. George Leonard

To the Western mind music is essentially something created by man, although it may be an unconscious process. For the shaman, music is something separate, a form of spiritual power that has an autonomous being apart from human minds. Gareth Frowen-Williams

Everything is in flux (ta panta rhei). Heraclitus

Everything is in motion - all matter is moving and changing its forms, and manifesting the energy within it. Suns and worlds rush through space, their particles constantly changing and moving. Yogi Ramacharaka

Scientifically when you raise your consciousness, you lower your vibrations because physically something that's dense has a higher vibration. Dr Fred Allen Wolf

The physical character of music is indeed based on mechanics and explained by mathematics, but its origin is in the heavens. Julius Portnoy

This new rhythm consciousness is oriented not toward performance and musical virtuosity, but toward personal transformation, consciousness expansion and community building. Anne Cushman

The purpose of rhythm is to prolong the moment of contemplation, the moment when we are both asleep and awake, which is the one moment of creation, by hushing us with alluring monotony, while it holds us waking by variety, to keep us in that state of perhaps real trance, in which the mind liberated by the will is unfolded in symbols. W B Yeats

Rhythm and motion are the foundations of musical art. Igor Stravinsky

Emotions of any kind are produced by melody and rhythm; therefore by music one becomes accustomed to feeling the right emotions; music has power to form character, and the various kinds of music based on the various modes, may be distinguished by their effects on character. Aristotle

The mind has no power to resist a gong well played. Yogi Bhajan

The gong is the sound of Creativity itself. One who plays the gong, plays the Universe. Out of it came all music, all sounds and all words. The sound of the gong is the nucleus of the Word. Yogi Bhajan

The mallet is the will of the infinite, the gong the creation, and the sound is the spirit song, the heartbeat of the soul. Yogi Bhajan

The gong is not a musical instrument. The gong is God. So it is said; so it is. Yogi Bhajan

For each kosha, and the yoga techniques that accompany them, one can trace the effects that the sound of the gong produces. When used with asana, pranayama, mantra, sound, meditation, ritual and relaxation, the gong accelerates the progress of the yogi in integrating the five koshas that make up the human experience, and enables us to realise our eternal nature. Mehtab Benton

Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony penetrate most powerfully into the innermost part of the soul and lay forcible hands upon it, bearing grace with them, so making graceful him who is rightly trained, and him who is not, the reverse; and also because he who has received this true education of the inner being will most shrewdly perceive omissions or faults in art and nature, and with a true taste, while he praises and rejoices over and receives into his soul the good, and becomes noble and good, he will justify blame and hate the bad, now in the days of his youth, even before he is able to know the reason why, and when reason comes he will salute the friend with whom his education has made him long familiar. Plato

All audible musical sound is given to us for the sake of harmony, which has motions akin to the orbits in our soul, and which, as anyone who makes intelligent use of the arts knows, is not to be used, as is commonly thought, to give irrational pleasure, but as a heaven-sent ally in reducing to order any disharmony in the revolutions within us. Rhythm, again, was given us from the same heavenly source to help us in the same way; for most of us lack measure and grace. Plato

The Pythagoreans, whom Plato follows in many respects, call music the harmonisation of opposites, the unification of disparate things, and the reconciliation of warring elements...Music, as they say, is the basis of agreement among things in nature and of the best government in the universe. As a rule it assumes the guise of harmony in the universe, of lawful government in a state, and of a sensible way of life in the home. It brings together and unites. Theon of Smyrna

All music, based upon melody and rhythm, is the earthly representative of heavenly music. Plotinus

Music creates order out of chaos; for rhythm imposes unanimity upon the divergent, melody imposes continuity upon the disjointed, and harmony imposes compatibility upon the incongruous. Yehudi Menuhin

The noble-minded one's music is mild and delicate, keeps a uniform mood, enlivens and moves. Such a person does not harbour pain or mourn in their heart; violent and daring movements are foreign to them. Confucius

Good music can minister to minds diseased, Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow, Raze out the written troubles of the brain, And with its sweet, oblivious antidote, Cleanse the full bosom of all perilous stuff Which weighs upon the heart. Shakespeare

The end of all good music is to affect the soul. Monteverdi

Music can definitely change metabolism, affect muscular energy, raise or lower blood pressure, and influence digestion. It may be able to do all these things more successfully and pleasantly than any stimulants that produce those changes in our bodies. Julius Portnoy

May your ears hear and your eyes see! All is harmony, sound and colour. Seven notes and seven colours intertwine and move around you in eternal nuptials. There is no silent colour. The Universe is a lyre. There is no invisible sound, the Universe is a prism. George Sand

Human music is the harmony which may be known by any person who turns to contemplation of themselves. Gioseffo Zarlino

Music in the soul can be heard by the Universe. Lao Tzu

Assuming that the world at large is structured like a macrocosm, then man as microcosm must have a relationship to it. Therefore, Pythagoras and Plato said that the soul of the human being is a harmony; this is not only supported and proven by many scholars, but one has also made the experience that a well-proportioned human body with its limbs displays the proportiones musicae (musical proportions.) Andreas Werckmeister

The idea of music as a universal language is possible because human beings have the mental equipment to feel beyond the cultural trappings of the different worlds of music to the common humanity which inspired the music. Thus music can become a universal language when individuals are acquainted with all forms of artistic musical expression, and through the transformation of individuals it becomes a 'vehicle for world peace and the unification of mankind'. John Blacking

It has been said since ancient times that the nature of reality is much closer to music than to a machine, and this is confirmed by many discoveries in modern science. The essence of a melody does not lie in its notes; it lies in the relationships between the notes, in the intervals, frequencies and rhythms. When a string is set vibrating we hear not only a single tone, but also its overtones - an entire scale is sounded. Thus each note involves all the others, just as each sub-atomic particle involves all the others, according to current ideas in particle physics. Fritjof Capra

Musical creations must be generated anew again and again. They flow onward in the surge and swell of their harmonies and melodies, a reflection of the soul, which in its incarnations must always experience itself in the onward-flowing stream of time. Just as the human soul is an evolving entity, so its reflection here on earth is a flowing one. Rudolph Steiner

The dissonances of today are the consonances of tomorrow. Nadia Boulanger

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Aldous Huxley

Silence is a source of great strength. Lao Tzu

Silence is an ocean. Speech is a river. When the ocean is searching for you, don't walk into the river. Listen to the ocean. Rumi

Feeling the emptiness at the centre of things, one experiences the profound silence which is the birthplace of sounds, of planets, of suns, of thoughts and of life itself. It is here that we hear the Celestial Music and remember. Randall McClellan

Thus without music no discipline can be perfect without it. For the very universe, it is said, is held together by a certain harmony of sounds, and the heavens themselves are made to revolve by the modulation of harmony. Every word we speak, every pulsation of out veins is related by musical rhythms of the powers of harmony. St Isidore of Seville

Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate and eternal form. Plato

Music is a metaphor for a symphonic view of the universe in which we are surrounded and upheld by Divine Love. Hildegard of Bingen

Let me hear his voice, so that I may know him. Socrates

The human voice is the organ of the soul. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The person who has found the key-note to their voice, has found the key to their life. Hazrat Inayat Khan

The voice is a light. If the light becomes dim, it has not gone out; it is there. It is the same with the voice. If it does not shine, it only means that it has not been cultivated; you must cultivate it again, and it will shine once more. Hazrat Inayat Khan

Music is the echo of the glory and beauty of heaven. And in echoing that glory and beauty, it carries human praise back to heaven. Hildegard of Bingen

The human voice needs no training; it is already there, finished and perfect as an entity sounding in the ideal world. What is waiting for is liberation! Valborg Werbeck-Svardstrom

The voice is the key to spiritual transformation.....through working with the voice we can learn to enter the state known by the Tibetans as 'rigpa', the awareness which combines emptiness with clarity. This leads ultimately to illumination. Jill Purce

Tibetan ritual music is not concerned with the emotions of temporal individuality, but with the ever-present, timeless qualities of universal life, in which our personal joys and sorrows do not exist. To bring us in touch with this realm is the purpose of meditation as well as Tibetan ritual music, which is built upon the deepest vibrations that a human voice can produce: sounds that seem to come from the womb of the earth or from the depth of space like rolling thunder, the mantric sound of nature, which symbolises the creative vibrations of the universe, the origin of all things. Lama Govinda

When the mind becomes attuned, it becomes capable of hearing the voice of the unknown. The sounds which are heard in such a state do not belong to any particular language, religion or tradition. Swami Rama

Our essential blissful nature is vibration as expressed through pure consciousness, heart-centred love and, at a practical level, by the harmonious nature of the human voice. To be that Self is to dissolve all the stresses, in whatever form, that impede those vibrations. The greatest use of the voice is to re-tune ourselves in body, mind and above all, spirit. James D'Angelo

Humming is the agent that helps to draw us into a profound state of quietude, relaxation and peace. Its comforting sound leads us deep within where we can find our true sense of self and therefore have great realisations and ideas. James D'Angelo

The essence of sacred knowledge is word and sound, the essence of word and sound is OM. The Upanishads

If the inhale is receiving from the universal flow and the exhale is giving, then humming is receiving and toning is giving. OM is a balanced sound, being both giving and receiving. The 'O' is the external expression of the sound and the 'M' is the internalisation of the sound. Humming can reinforce the love you have for yourself and, along with focussed intention, can help you to free up any resistance around receiving. Lyz Cooper

OM Mahnee Padmay Hoom: OM is the Way of Universality; Mahnee is the Way of Unity and Equality; Padmay  is the Way of Unfolding Vision, and Hoom is the Way of Integration. Lama Govinda

Music is the harmonious voice of creation; an echo of a divine concord which the entire universe is destined one day to sound. Mazzini

The more souls who resonate together, the greater the intensity of their love and mirror-like, each soul reflects the other. Dante

Somewhere within the Soul there is silence. Attain unto it. It is a pearl of great price. Anon

True silence is the rest of the mind; it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body. William Penn

A day of silence can be a pilgrimage in itself. Hafiz

If you will meditate on the primal sound, you will see the unseen, you will hear the unheard, and you will feel the unfeelable. Yogi Bhajan

There are two ways of contemplation of Brahman: in sound and in silence. The sound of Brahman is OM. With OM we go to the End; the silence of Brahman. The End is immortality, union and peace. Even as a spider reaches the liberty of space by means of its own thread, the man of contemplation by means of OM reaches freedom. Maitri Upanishad

OM is the symbolic word for the infinite, the perfect, the eternal. It is meant to fill the mind with the presentiment of eternal perfection and to free it from the world of narrow selfishness. Rabindranath Tagore

Having taken as a bow the great weapon of the Secret Teaching, one should fix in it the arrow sharpened by constant meditation; drawing it with a mind filled with Brahman. OM is the bow; the arrow is the self; Brahman is said to be the mark. With heedfulness it is to be penetrated; one should become one with It as the arrow in the mark. Mundaka Upanishad

Plainchant alone posses all at once the purity, the joy and the lightness necessary for the soul's flight towards Truth. Olivier Messiaen

When in my most inspired moods, I have definite compelling visions, involving a higher selfhood. I feel at such moments that I am tapping the source of Infinite and Eternal energy from which you and I and all things proceed. Religion calls it God. Richard Strauss

I have very definite impressions while in that trance-like condition, which is the prerequisite of all true creative effort. I feel that I am one with this vibrating force, that is omniscient, and that I can draw upon it to an extent that is limited only by my own capacity to do so. Richard Wagner

My most beautiful melodies have come to me in my dreams. Max Bruch

We composers are projectors of the infinite into the finite. Grieg

Let the mind be concentrated upon the shining light in the lotus of the heart, which is located between the chest and abdomen. The eight petals of this lotus, which usually face downward, are reversed upward by the process of the expirative control of breath. In the middle thereof is the sphere of the sun, the place of waking consciousness, and it is called 'A'. Above that is the sphere of the moon, the place of dreaming consciousness, the 'U'. Above that is the sphere of fire, the place of dreamless sleep, the 'M'. Above that is the higher space, the sound of Brahman itself, the fourth state of ultra-consciousness. Vacaspati

Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life, bringing peace, abolishing strife. Kahlil Gibran

Then the gates of his heart were flung open, and his joy flew far over the sea. And he closed his eyes and prayed in the silences of his soul. Kahlil Gibran

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. Kahlil Gibran

Sound is the source of all manifestation. He who knows the secret of the sound knows the mystery of the whole universe. Hazrat Inayat Khan

It is the state of vibration to which a person is tuned that accounts for his soul's note. Hazrat Inayat Khan

With every breath, the sound of love surrounds us. Rumi

Seek the sound that never ceases, seek the sun that never sets. Rumi

The Sound is inside us. It is invisible. Wherever I look I find it. Guru Nanak

The universe was manifested out of the Divine Sound; From It came into being the Light. Shamas-i-Tabriz

Sound, stars, and light are all inside. Maharaj Sardar Bahadur Jagat Singh

Space, in its most abstract and most essential reality, is vibratory. It is Sound. Dane Rudhyar

A new dawn may come, vibrant with a new creative tone, the AUM of a new day. Dane Rudhyar

 Architecture is frozen music. Goethe

Seek the true Master with faith, love, and patience. He will give the Light to find the hidden entrance. If with constant effort you attune the Inner Ear, The way to God opens and the Path will be clear. Tulsi Sahib

I am the taste of the water, the light of the sun and moon. I am the sound in the ether, and the possibility within you. Bhagavad Gita 7:8

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the voice is surely the door to the heart. Wayne Perry

The overtones are like the stairway to heaven. They can do a lot of healing in the body, triggering something that changes the frequency. George Deuter

In Egypt the priests hymn the gods by means of the seven vowels which they utter in due order. Demetrius

The human voice is the instrument par excellence of the priest and enchanter. It is the voice that seeks afar the Invisibles summoned, and makes the necessary objects into reality. Every one of the sounds it emits has a peculiar power which escapes the notice of the common run of mortals, but which is known to and made use of by the adepts...but as every one has its peculiar force, great care must be taken not to change their order or to substitute one for the other. Maspero

No mystery is more excellent...saving only the mystery of the seven vowels and their forty and nine powers, and their number thereof; and no name is more excellent than all these vowels. Pistis Sophia

Of forms of spiritual practice, the chanting of mantra is supreme. Bhagavad Gita 10:35

Mantra is the essence of sound, and the embodiment of a Spiritual Truth in the form of sound. Each syllable is impregnated with spiritual power and vibrates with a blessing. Sogyal Rinpoche

With a mantra you liberate yourself from the representational, and experience only the heart of the matter. Joska Soos

Mantra carries one through every ordeal. It is repeated not for the sake of repetition, but for the sake of purification. Each repetition has a new meaning. Mahatma Gandhi

The seven heavens sounded each one vowel down to earth and became the creation of all things that be on earth. Pythagoras

Just as written music cannot convey the emotional and spiritual impact of heard or performed music, so the sound-symbol of a mantra and its intellectual analysis cannot convey the experience of an initiate and of the profound effects it creates in the course of prolonged practice. Lama Govinda

All mantras are modifications of an original vibration which sustains the whole energy of the world. Lama Govinda

In the original mantric language, the name of a thing is the sound of the thing itself. Jill Purce

Toning is before technique. It connects us to the primal source of sound, the ancient well that lives inside each person. Toning is a spontaneous expression of our life force. We can pull sound up from the roots of our lives: our hopes, fears, frustrations, sorrows and joys. We mix these with breath. Toning transforms emotions into radiant tones. Susan Elizabeth Hale

Through toning the body has the opportunity to slip into and rest in our perfect pattern. It surrenders to the highest which the soul can direct the mind to imagine. In this the person finds peace and the answers to problems. His heritage of joy and wellbeing is calmed. Laurel Elizabeth Keyes

The flute accompanies the mystical marriage of the soul with God. Hildegard of Bingen

When rhythm inspires us, the magical consciousness awakes in us. Peter Hamel

The apt use of a word (in its poetical sense), its repetition, twice, three times, or even more frequently, according to the need of the poem, will not only tend to intensify the internal structure but also bring out unsuspected spiritual properties in the word itself. Further, frequent repetition of a word (a favourite game of children, forgotten in later life) deprives the word of its external reference. Wassily Kandinsky

Before its incarnation the soul is sound. It is for this reason that we love sound. Hazrat Inayat Khan

Life is a symphony, and the action of every person in this life is the playing of their particular part in the music. Hazrat Inayat Khan

The physical effect of sound has also a great influence upon the human body. The whole mechanism, the muscles, the blood circulation, the nerves are all moved by the power of vibration. As there is resonance for every sound, so the human body is a living resonator for sound.... Every pitch that is a natural pitch of the voice will be a source of a person's own healing as well as that of others when he sings a note of that pitch. Hazrat Inayat Khan

You can look at disease as a form of disharmony.....there's no organ system in the body that's not affected by sound and music and vibration. Mitchell Gaynor

I would teach children music, physics and philosophy: but most importantly music, for in the patterns of music and all the arts are the keys of learning. Plato

We ourselves are rhythm. The beating of our heart, the pulse throbbing in our wrist or head, our circulation, the working of the whole mechanisms of our body is rhythmic. Hazrat Inayat Khan

There is no greater and more living resonator of sound than the human body. Sound has an effect on each atom of the body, for each atom resounds. Hazrat Inayat Khan

It is through sound that we transcend the temporal and touch infinity, leaving behind the tribulations of the flesh, and that is the place of healing and miracles. Hildegard of Bingen

Those who sing, pray twice. St Augustine

Sing the song of the soul. let it rise from tone. Let it rhythmically flow into its own life. Let it become you. To sing another's song is to rob the other's power and your own. Move your own body to its rhythm. Just sing yourself over and'll be purified. Don Campbell

What does singing a jubilation mean? It is the realisation that words cannot express the inner music of the heart. For those who sing in the harvest field or vineyard, or in work deeply occupying the attention, when they are overcome with joy at the words of the song, being filled with exultation, the words fail to express their emotion, so leaving the syllables of the words, they drop into vowel sounds...signifying that the heart is yearning to express what the tongue cannot utter. St Augustine

There are five different aspects of the art of music: the popular, that which induces motion of the body; technical, that which satisfies the intellect; artistic, that which has beauty and grace; appealing, that which pierces the heart; uplifting, that in which the soul hears the music of the spheres. Hazrat Inayat Khan

Musical sound by the movement of the air moves the body; by purified air (inside the ear) it excites the aerial spirit which is the bond between body and soul. By emotion it affects the senses and at the same time the soul. By meaning it works on the mind. Finally, by the very movement of the subtle air it penetrates strongly. By its contemperation it flows smoothly. By the conformity of its quality it floods us with a wonderful pleasure. By its nature, both spiritual and material, it at once seizes and claims as its own, man in his entirety. Marsilio Ficino

The octave is the mother, the generator, the and the origin, from which every other consonance and every other interval are derived. Gioseffo Zarlino

The octave is the most convincing symbol of unity we can find in nature. And in nature, it is omnipresent. Joachim-Ernst Berendt

The intellectual part corresponds to the octave because it has seven intervals and its species are seven. So there are found therein seven members: mind, imagination, memory, cogitation, opinion, reason and knowledge. To the fifth, with its four species and four intervals, correspond the four divisions of the senses: vision, hearing, smell and taste (touch being common to all of them, and especially taste). Gioseffo Zarlino

Using a sound range that matches the vibration of the problem, creates a resonance that has the potential to restore harmony. Joska Soos

There operates within the body vehicle a musical scale, and when it is allowed to sing forth in total freedom, then we are attuned to the Music of the Spheres. Elyse Betz Coulson

At the highest levels of music little changes: it is always the same vehicle for voyages to another world, the same revelation of divine and cosmic laws, the same powerful tool for self-transformation, as it was in ancient and even in prehistoric times. Joscelyn Godwin

Everything owes its existence solely and completely to sound. Sound is the factor which holds it together; sound is the basis of form and shape. Peter Guy Manners

If one holds that harmony is at work even in embryology in the generative phase, the actual processes must nevertheless be seen in their frequencies and intervals. Hans Jenny

If we can comprehend the wholeness of vibration or oscillation, and grasp the totalities in which it is manifested, then we have caught hold of reality. Hans Jenny

It is considered that each molecule of which an organ or a tissue is composed has its own individual sound pattern and emits a vibration peculiar to this pattern, a healthy organ will have its molecules working together in harmonious relationship with each other. Peter Guy Manners

Rhythmic patterns appear throughout the universe, from the very small to the very large. Atoms are patterns of probability waves, molecules are vibrating structures, and living organisms manifest multiple, interdependent patterns of fluctuations. Plants, animals and human beings undergo cycles of activity and rest, and all their physiological functions oscillate in rhythms of various perodicities. Fritjof Capra

For as in music there be but three perfect concords: the diapason, diapente and diatessaron. So in the harmony of the beams, by which the Genis come down, there are but three perfect aspects answerable to the harmony of the heavens, spheres and planets. John Heydon

Just as physical bodies make absolute light visible, so rhythm focuses tone into perceptible music. Without rhythm there can be tone but no motion in time, whilst without objects there can be light but no motion in space. It could be an argument in favour of the primacy of harmony (belonging to neither space not time) over melody and the rhythm that is inseparable from melody. Richard Wagner

It's not easy to listen to a piece and really know and feel what's going on in it all the time. It may be easy to take, or pleasant to hear for many people; it may evoke fanciful images in the mind, or bathe them in a sensuous glow, or stimulate, or soothe or whatever. But none of that is listening. And until we have a great listening public, and not a passively hearing one, we will never be a musically cultured nation. Leonard Bernstein

In my dreamings I hear and see ordered melodies and chords, familiar hues and forms; then, following this transitory stage I pass into the unreal and submit ecstatically to a vortex, a dizzying interpretation of superhuman sounds and colours. These fiery swords, these rivers of blue-orange lava, these sudden stars......behold the rainbow! Olivier Messiaen

There operates within the body vehicle a musical scale, and when it is allowed to sing forth in total freedom, then we are attuned to the Music of the Spheres. Elyse Betz Coulson

A note is a living cell.....It has the power of assimilation, of reproduction, of making exchanges, of growing. It is a microcosmos reflecting faithfully the macrocosmos, its laws, its cycle, its centre.....A note is a solar system. Dane Rudhyar

Not only the planetary orbits, but also the proportions within these orbits follow the laws of harmonics, much more so than statistical probability would lead us to expect......out of the seventy-eight notes created by the different planetary proportions, seventy-four belong to the major scale. Joachim-Ernst Berendt

It is appropriate that the culture of hearing and the miracle of the ear should be rediscovered at a time when patriarchy is losing power. Joachim-Ernst Berendt

Listen far beyond hearing, and call the unheard. Lao Tzu

By listening not with the ear but with the spirit, one can perceive the subtle sound. By entering into that sound, we enter into supreme purity. The deepest sound is silence...silence is sound unified with all of its opposites, and it is in this confluence that the power of meditation emerges. Deng Ming Dao

If we have a hope of improving the acoustic design of the world, it will be realisable only after the recovery of slience as a positive state in our lives. Still the noise of the mind: that is the first task - then everything else will follow in time. R Murray Schafer

Hear, and your soul shall live. Isaiah 55:3

My soul counselled me and charged me to listen for voices that rise neither from the tongue nor the throat. Before that day I heard but dully, and nought save clamour and loud cries came to my ears; But now I have learned to listen to silence, To hear its choirs singing the song of ages, Chanting the hymns of space, and disclosing the secrets of eternity. Kahlil Gibran

Speech is priceless If you speak it with knowledge. Weigh it in the scales of your heart Before it comes from the mouth. Kabir

Hearing is the first sense that develops in the womb. By the fifth month of pregnancy, the cochlea of the foetus's ear is fully developed. According to nurses, hearing is the last sense to leave before death. Of all the sensory organs, the ear is the most intricate. Kay Gardner

Sounds and music agitate and animate the arteries and the veins. This generates life-giving breath and brings to the heart harmony and rectitude. The kong note affects the spleen and brings saintliness to man. The kio note affects the liver and brings the harmony of perfect goodness to man. The tche note affects the heart and brings the harmony of perfect rites to man. The yu note affects the liver and brings the harmony of perfect wisdom to man. Su Ma T'Sien

And if there come the singers and the dancers and the flute players - buy of their gifts also. For they too are gatherers of fruit and frankincense, and that which they bring, though fashioned of dreams, is raiment and food for your soul. Kahlil Gibran

Music is not illusion, but revelation rather. Its triumphant power resides in the fact that it reveals to us beauties we find nowhere else, and that the apprehension of them is not transitory, but a perpetual reconcilement to life. Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Music demands an alert mind of intellectual capacity, but it is far from being an intellectual exercise. Musical cerebration as a game for its own sake may fascinate a small minority of experts or specialists, but it has no true significance unless its rhythmic patterns and melodic designs, its harmonic tensions and expressive timbres penetrate the deepest layer of our subconscious mind. Aaron Copland

Hold this sea-shell to your ear, And you shall hear, not the Andante of the sea, not the wild wind's symphony, but your own minstrelsy. Thomas Bailey Aldrich

Let us make this quite clear. The cultivation of silence in the breast, the cultivation of response to the inner voice, will lead the aspirant to the reception of the clear Voice of the Master, whose command he waits. White Eagle

Becoming at one with the sound requires acceptance, openness and complete surrender. In such  emptiness we come to inner silence, maybe even the 'sound of the void'. We may come to discover that our entire life revolves around this central still flame found in the silence of the heart. Frank Perry

For me, the word OM is like the sound of a large bell. It's first of all perceptible, then imperceptible, before finally fading away into infinite space. Thus the phenomenal world fades away into the Absolute. The unrefined, subtle and causal states are lost in the Great Cause; in the Absolute. The states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep merge with the fourth state, samadhi. When the bell sounds, it creates waves like those that form in the ocean when we cast a large stone into the water. The phenomena of the universe - eg the unrefined, subtle and causal state - seems to emerge from and return to the Absolute. The three other states of awareness are also derived from the Absolute, which is the fourth state. The waves of the ocean merge into the ocean. By this image of the 'dong' of the bell, I mean that the everlasting word OM symbolises the evolution and involution of phenomena from the absolute to the Absolute. My divine Mother has shown me that, in the infinite ocean of the Absolute, waves rise, then disappear into it. In that infinite spiritual space, millions of planets and worlds arise, then dissolve. I know not what your books say, but I have seen all that. Ramakrishna

Abstract sound is called Saut-e Sarmad by the Sufis; all space is filled with it. The vibrations of this sound are too fine to be audible or visible to the material ears or eyes, since it is even difficult for the eyes to see the form and colour of the ethereal vibrations on the external plane. It was the Saut-e Sarmad, the sound of the abstract plane, which Mohammad heard in the cave of Ghar-e Hira when he became lost in his divine ideal. The Qur'an refers to this sound in the words 'Be! And all became.' Moses heard this very sound on Mount Sinai, when in communion with God; and the same word was audible to Christ when absorbed in his Heavenly Father in the wilderness. Shiva heard the same Anahad Nada during his Samadhi in the cave of the Himalayas. The flute of Krishna is symbolic of the same sound. This sound is the source of all revelation to the Masters, to whom it is revealed from within; it is because of this that they know and teach one and the same truth. Hazrat Inayat Khan

Sound is about to sprout in para (supreme) form; it becomes two-leafed (that is just manifested) in pashyanti (radiant) form; it buds in the Madhyama (subliminal) form; and it blooms in the Vaikhari (acoustic) form. Sound which has been developed in the above-mentioned manner, will become unmanifested when the order is reversed. Yogakundalya Upanishad, 3. 18-19

The body may be compared to an instrument, and the Ego to the player. You begin by producing effects on yourself; then little by little you learn to play on the tattvas and principles; learn first the notes, then the chords, and then the melodies. Once the student is master of every chord, he may begin to be a co-worker with Nature and for others. He may then by the experience he has gained of his own nature, and by the knowledge of the chords, strike such as will be beneficial in another, and so will serve as a keynote for beneficial results. H. P. Blavatsky

Each of us is a person with many levels....I have a sexual centre, three vital centres, two mental centres and a suprapersonal centre. If I can perceive that, I have come far enough to have awoken seven different centres in myself. And with different things I can bring each centre into vibration. There is also music that goes through all the centres: hence there are moments in which you are addressed in a  purely sacred way, and other moments in which you are addressed purely sensually, purely erotically. That is pretty reckless music. One must be very strong to be able to experience that completely. Above all, this music must be exceptionally well balanced, fantastically composed. If it is not, then there are overloadings, and when one hears it one is overexcited in a certain way, and brought out of equilibrium. Hence it is naturally better if one hears music that draws one up higher than one is by nature. We are mostly pretty physical sacks. Karlheinz Stockhausen

Esoteric science teaches that every sound in the visible world awakens its corresponding sound in the invisible realms, and arouses to action some force or other on the occult side of Nature. Moreover, every sound corresponds to a colour and a number (potency, psychic or physical) and to a sensation on some plane. All these find an echo in every one of the so-far developed elements, and even on the terrestial plane, in the lives that swarm in the terrene atmosphere, thus prompting them to action. H. P. Blavatsky

The flute of interior time is played whether we hear it or not, what we mean by 'love' is its sound coming in. When a love hits the farthest edge of excess, it reaches a wisdom. And the fragrance of that knowledge! It penetrates our thick bodies, it goes through walls - Its network of notes has a structure as if a million suns were arranged inside. This tune has truth in it. Where else have you heard a sound like this? Kabir

There is nothing in the world that does not speak to us. Everything and everybody reveals their own nature, character, and secrets continuously. The more we open up our inner senses, the more we can understand the voice of everything. Hazrat Inayat Khan

Our gaze into the infinite cosmos Encircling us with rich and gentle harmonies Inclines us through vision, ardour and faithful prayer To uplift our imperfect selves Higher than through logic and erudition; Until the spirit of ultimate majesty Grants to our soul The grace to be merged Into the exalted harmony of the World. Paul Hindemith

There rose a tree. Oh growth so great! Oh Orpheus sings! Oh tree, I hear you now! And all is silent, but even in the silence new beginning, sign and change arose. Out of the silence animals came from bed and nest in the forest, clear and calm; and it happened that it was neither ruse nor fear, per se, that caused them to be silent, but listening, yelling, screaming, roaring seemed small in their hearts and where there was no shelter to receive this, no refuge of darkest desire with an entrance with posts that shiver, you created temples in their ear. Rainer Maria Rilke

How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank! Here will we sit and let the sounds of music Creep in our ears; soft stillness and the night Become the touches of sweet harmony. Look how the floor of heaven Is thick inlaid with patines of bright gold; There's not the smallest orb which thou behold'st But in his motion like an angel sings, Still quiring to the young-ey'd cherubins; Such harmony is in immortal souls, But whilst this muddy vesture of decay Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it. Come, ho, and wake Diana with a hymn; With sweetest touches pierce your mistress' ear, And draw her home with music. Shakespeare
